Tomas Salvo, an aerospace engineering student at , says his Reaper jet-powered drone hit 790 km/h (491 mph) carrying a 1.2 kg payload, above the previous record of 465 mph, Tom's Hardware reports. The drone has a 250-newton jet engine and a carbon fibre shell, cost about USD 13,000 to build, and was assembled in his dorm.
The figures come from Salvo's own post and the run was not officially recorded by Guinness. He is aiming at the USD 800,000 Boom Prize, which requires passing Mach 1, the speed of sound, so the drone is still far from that target.
