Carnegie Mellon researchers have transferred a rope-handling model trained in simulation to a physical robot. Before attempting its task, the robot briefly wiggles the rope while an overhead camera records the resulting wave.

The system, called , uses that motion to estimate physical properties and plan how to move the rope towards a goal. It is designed to avoid repeated trial-and-error attempts at the task itself.

The university discusses rescue-rope throwing as a possible application. It does not report a rescue deployment; the demonstrated setup uses an external overhead camera.
