researchers have demonstrated a robotic arm that stabilises an off-centre basketball using touch signals from its upper and lower arm. combines a soft optical tactile skin, joint-angle information and a feedback controller.

In another experiment, the arm detected a hand entering its path through contact, stopped and replanned its movement. The university reports the work in Nature Sensors.

The demonstrations concern a research system. Suggested uses in homes, industry and medical assistance are possible future applications, not deployments shown by this work.
